FIND OUT MORE!

Hi and thanks for stopping by!

Music has been with me since early childhood. I feel very privileged to be able to earn my living as a musician. I am currently based in Ashburton, Devon.

As is the way with the arts, I do a number of different disciplines within music. I play soprano, alto, and tenor saxes and clarinet professionally. I teach clarinet, saxophone, jazz improvisation (all instruments) and music theory as well as running various groups including a big band, jazz bands, a clarinet group and workshops (usually with a improvisational slant). I also regularly arrange and compose and partake in quite a bit of band leading. My influences and interests lie primarily in jazz and classical music, but I also love working with salsa, funk, soul, motown, blues and more. Oh and by the way, I read music, play by ear and improvise to a high standard. Due to the COVID pandemic, I now have a well-resourced online teaching facility so I am also able to teach via zoom or face to face or a combination of the two.

This site should explain everything. Look around check me out and if you want to know more, get in touch. If you want to see me play live visit my gig diary page.

"As an organisation we really value Neil's contribution to our education programme and are delighted to have him as a tutor. We would have no hesitation in using Neil in the future or in recommending him to any other organisation. Personally, as a workshop student, I have found his teaching technique to cater for all abilities, his technical skills excellent and his enthusiasm boundless!"

"Not only has Neil taught Zachary how to play the Saxophone but he also built his confidence and encouraged him very positively. Thank you Neil."

"As someone who had not been in any formal education or picked up a musical instrument for decades, I had some reservations about starting sax lessons. I found Neil took great care in understanding my objectives and needs as an individual, and in developing a personalised learning and practice programme for me. I find the lessons challenging and stimulating but most of all enjoyable and taught in way that really suits the way I like to learn. Neil is able to vary things as I need and he has been really helpful in my starting to understand and develop my own personal style, sound, and sax set up as well as all of the other essential areas of music tuition."

"Having attended several of Neil's jazz workshops and played in his Big Band I highly recommend his approach as a music educator. With great musical skills he has a real ability in communicating to individuals and groups with humour and encouragement. His teaching is well prepared and challenging yet always supportive. Feedback is welcomed which leads to innovations in teaching methods and styles over time. It's great to see the effect of his enthusiasm as players grow in confidence and are eager to keep learning."
