I have been teaching for more than fifteen years. I teach clarinet and all saxes, and can teach in all styles including classical and jazz. I teach people to read music, play by ear and improvise. I would like to think that whilst keeping an eye on good educational practices and appropriate development on an instrument and music in general, I also am able to tailor my teaching to the needs of the individual. I also think lessons and learning to play an instrument should be enjoyable and fun and I hope that my teaching reflects that. I also have taught jazz piano, improvisation on any instrument and music theory. I have an LRSM teaching and CTABRSM and am CRB checked.

Workshops and Groups
I have lead many, many workshops and groups over the last ten years (especially over the last five years) and really love taking them. Most of the workshops I run are within the field of jazz and improvisation, but I am open to and capable of working with music groups playing other styles as well for example classical groups and soul bands. Currently I run two jazz band, a big band, a soul funk band and weekly improvisation sessions at Ivybridge Community College. I also run a weekly workshop for Teignmouth Jazz in the Autumn and Winter terms. I have given workshops for Plymouth Music Service, Drum Crazy and Torbay Music Service as well as various individual schools. I have an LRSM teaching and CTABRSM.

Workshops with The Neil Maya Quartet (as part of the Arts Council England Award)
There is still some funding available for this very successful and exciting project. This project works both in primary and secondary schools and the format can vary depending on requirements. Briefly in primary schools we often give hour long interactive concerts for the children and also an hour long session introducing improvisation to beginner instrumentalists. In secondary schools members of the quartet can give workshops to develop instrumentalist's improvisational skills as well as workshops with the whole band. For both primary and secondary schools we can give an evening concert for both the school communtiy and local community. Again for more information on this exciting project do get in touch.
Testimonial
"As an organisation we really value Neil's contribution to our education programme and are delighted to have him as a tutor. We would have no hesitation in using Neil in the future or in recommending him to any other organisation. Personally, as a workshop student, I have found his teaching technique to cater for all abilities, his technical skills excellent and his enthusiasm boundless!"
Ian Pennicott, Secretary, Friends of Teignmouth Jazz Festival
"Neil Maya has worked with Ivybridge College musicians for 7 years, running jazz improvisation workshops for students of all ages. His workshops combine in-depth information, hands-on learning of skills and inspirational demonstrations. He is superb at tailoring workshops to age groups, exam requirements and concert performance."
J Wright, former Head of Music, Ivybridge Community College.
