I have over twenty years experience in both teaching instrumental music and professional live performance (clarinet and saxophone). As well as teaching privately one to one, I have run many groups and workshops specialising in areas such as street band workshops, jazz improvisation groups and larger more arranged groups such as big bands and soul funk bands. I run my own jazz quartet (which plays original compositions by myself and other band members) as well as many other function bands. I am skilled at teaching, giving workshops and playing in many styles including jazz, pop, funk and salsa as well as classical music. I have written a range of compositions both for the Neil Maya Quartet and for educational purposes, and arranged many tunes for groups (especially jazz standards) and for musical theatre. I have been CRB checked.
I currently teach instrumental music and run two bands at Ivybridge Community College on a weekly basis. I teach clarinet and saxophone students privately at home and work with all standards and styles and teach students aged 9 to 77. I run my own jazz improvisation workshops in Totnes and musically direct the South Devon Big Bandam also one of the tutors for Teignmouth Jazz. I also teach privately and give one off workshops. In the past I have taught at a number of schools both in Devon and Sheffield, had an extensive private teaching practice and have taken many groups.
I'm currently very busy playing sax with various groups including the Neil Maya Quartet, The Drat Pack, Solar and Lush Life plus any depping work which comes along. I have been playing professionally for about fifteen years and have been especially busy since moving to Devon in 2001. I have also recently ventured back in to the classical world, performing Concerto for Stan Getz with the Torbay Symphony Orchestra on the tenor sax. I still play the clarinet occasionally in orchestras when I find the time.
Arranging and composing...
For the last ten years I've been arranging mainly for the various groups I run, and have done a few more specific jobs too. I have arranged for Michael Campari and the Solar System, Jazzwise, Brassneck and Ivybridge Community College Soul Funk Band. I have been composing for the last ten years or so and a list of tunes I have written (mainly for the quartet) can be found on the arranging & composing page.
I took up the piano when I was five and clarinet when I was eight. I went to the Royal College of Music Junior Department as an exhibitioner from Bedfordshire when I was eleven until age eighteen. I also played in the Beds Youth Orchestra until I was twenty-two. I began playing sax when I was fifteen and almost immediately started playing jazz. As well as with other teachers, I had lessons for about a year with Jean Toussainte and also for about a year with Richard Ingham.
