Arranging and Composing
I've been arranging for about ten years, firstly for small saxophone and clarinet groups but moving on to arranging horn parts for largish horn sections. I've also done absolutely loads of transcribing of tunes, especially for large soul, funk, disco and salsa bands. I also have transcribed and arranged for the band for musical theatre. I use sibelius 5 and am pretty efficent with it. I am happy to consider taking on any arranging projects.
Composing
I started composing in earnest about five years ago. I began writing primarily for the Neil Maya Quartet, so loosely in a jazz influenced style. I've always been keen to write something a bit more adventurous than say just a twelve bar blues (having said that, I wish I'd invented that sequence - don't you?). I often try and write programme music and have written about the birth of my second son, shed men and my home town of Totnes. I like to work with interesting grooves and not necessarily stick to one style within a piece.
For the future I'd love to write outside the jazz style completely (as well as continue writing for the quartet) and maybe do a few more educational tunes. Who knows? Only time will tell and allow.
You can check out quite a lot of my compositions on both of the Neil Maya Quartet's CDs; Out of the Woodshed and Bread and Circuses, as well as various clips around and about this site and on the Neil Maya Quartet site. Below is a list of my main compositions to date, with links to Sibelius Music if you wish to view a sample of and purchase a score.
